Joseph Royce was born August 19, 1921 in New York City. In 1941 he completed his undergraduate degree at Denison University in Ohio. In 1942, he was made a Research Officer in the U.S. Air Force Aviation Psychology Program after a year of graduate work at Ohio State University. After this service and the end of WWII, Royce went back to graduate school and completed his PhD in 1951 at the University of Chicago.
